NEW MOON IN CAPRICORN - SRAVANA NAKSHATRA - A TIME TO LISTEN -JANUARY 29TH @7:37AM EST
The Sun moved into Capricorn last week and the New Moon is now there come 1/29, a time for new beginnings and noticeable longer days. It is also the time in the Celtic calendar where the ancient fire festival of Imbolc, or Brighid’s/St. Brighid’s Day is celebrated.
As we cross the threshold into the East Gate on the Great Wheel of the Year we are greeted with possibility, new beginnings, rebirth and planting seeds. We are waking from the deep dark slumber and shedding of Winter Solstice and experiencing the return of the light, known in ancient times as the first Spring.
Imbolc means “in the belly” and is compared to a very early pregnancy where the life-force is stirring. We begin to also see nature waking up with the appearance of snowdrops and dandelions. This Sacred Fire Festival beckons to the East, calls upon the element of Air, the breath, our communication, nervous system, Brighid in her maiden form, birds and winged ones, fairies and wind spirits, Birch Tree Medicine and many plant spirits connected with the Triple Goddess and Saint Brighid. She is the light born of the darkness, a Lady of the Springs, a woman of this world and the “other” world. She is a fairy woman who’s is perceived in candlelight and the hearth fire bestowing her protection on the home and family. It’s a time when we weave Brighid’s crosses to hang over our thresholds for protection in the upcoming year. You can also lay a blue cloth outside to receive her breath as she moves through the landscape on the evening of January 31. Then you will have “Brighid’s Mantle” as a healing cloth for the upcoming year!
Imbolc is a threshold, a turning point that we can feel through our contemplation in Nature. A time for planting seeds, a great time to start sorting out your garden for the upcoming spring. I am currently deciding what new herb friends will join the Medicinal Herb Garden this year, a few have been calling out to me.
The constellation of Capricorn is ruled by the planet Saturn, the Karmic Leveler! In Jyotish (Vedic Astrology) its associated with the sea creature Makara, with a head of an antelope and body of a crocodile, it’s depicted as half mammal and half fish. In Hindu mythology the Makara symbolizes power, strength, and the balance between land and water. It’s associated with prosperity, fertility and the mysterious qualities of the sea! Some themes of Capricorn are ambition, hard work, focus and dedication.
This New Moon is taking place in Capricorn within the nakshatra of Sravana which consists of three stars in the head of the eagle, Aquilla. It is said that these stars also form the 3 footprints of Vishnu the preserver of the universe and the deity associated with this nakshatra. The shakti (power) of this area of the sky is connection. Sravana is called the “star of learning” is derived from the Sanskrit word Sru which means “to hear”, it’s symbol is an ear. It reflects the ability to hear the subtle etheric realms. Dennis Harness states that the cosmic sound of OM may be audible for those that have luminaries or planets placed here. It is a perfect time for meditation and contemplation.
I think it’s a boon for RFK Jr. to be doing his confirmation hearing just 2hrs after the New Moon on Wednesday! Partnerships and business associates are highlighted as this New Moon occurs in his 7th house where his Natal Sun, Mercury, Venus and Rahu sit! Lots of energy!!! A little Mundane astrology for you here!
We also have the Chinese New Year ushering the Year fo the Wood Snake. I’m only mentioning because I’m a Fire Snake and my first born is a Water Snake so it has some relevance for me. My knowledge of Chinese Astrology is minimal but Wood feeds fire and is connected to the planet Jupiter, springtime and the East direction. There are definitely some correlations here.
